Phytochemical Screening of Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) Leaves from Way Kanan District Using 70% Ethanol Solvent

Background: Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) is a plant widely recognized for its health benefits due to the presence of various bioactive compounds in its concentrated leaf extract, including flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids and steroids which exhibit pharmacological effects such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. To identify the compounds extracted using 70% ethanol, a phytochemical screening is required. Method: This study employed a qualitative approach using binahong leaf extract obtained through maceration with 70% ethanol as the solvent. The resulting extract was analyzed phytochemically using specific reagents to identify compound groups, including alkaloids (Mayer, Dragendorff, and Bouchardat reagents), flavonoids (Mg–HCl test), tannins (FeCl?), saponins (froth test), as well as steroids and terpenoids (Liebermann–Burchard test). Results: The binahong leaf extract (A. cordifolia) obtained with 70% ethanol contained flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, and steroids, as indicated by positive results in each respective test. Discussion: The presence of these compounds demonstrates that binahong leaves possess potential pharmacological effects, and the use of 70% ethanol is effective in extracting these active constituents due to its semi-polar nature. Conclusion: The qualitative phytochemical screening confirms that binahong leaves from Way Kanan district extracted with 70% ethanol contain various active compounds capable of providing pharmacological benefits to living organisms.
