Introduction: Melukat is a Balinese purification ritual increasingly practiced in the context of wellness and spiritual tourism. This tradition is believed to provide psychological calm, stress reduction, and emotional balance for participants. Hypertension itself is closely related to chronic stress, making relaxation-based interventions a relevant non-pharmacological strategy. Wellness tourism in Bali provides a space to integrate cultural practices such as melukat into holistic health programs. Therefore, it is important to examine the potential relationship between melukat and hypertension management within the framework of wellness tourism.
Method: A literature review was conducted by examining anthropological articles, qualitative studies, and medical research related to stress, relaxation interventions, and blood pressure. The data was analyzed narratively to identify relevant mechanisms and opportunities for integration into wellness tourism.
Discussion: Findings suggest that melukat has the potential to reduce stress through psychological and spiritual mechanisms, as well as activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. However, direct clinical evidence for blood pressure reduction is limited and further interventional research is needed.
Conclusion: Melukat has potential value as part of a holistic and culturally based adjuvant therapy for hypertension. Its integration into Bali's wellness tourism is promising, but requires scientific validation for safe and standardized implementation.
