The Relationship Between Physical Workload and Nutritional Status Among Coffee Pickers in Tanggamus Regency

Background: Tanggamus Regency is one of the largest robusta coffee-producing regions in Lampung Province, Indonesia. Coffee harvesting requires intensive physical activity performed for long durations in outdoor environments. High physical workload without adequate nutritional intake may influence workers’ nutritional status. This study aimed to determine the relationship between physical workload and nutritional status among coffee pickers in Tanggamus Regency. Method: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach conducted from June to November 2025 in Pulau Panggung District, Tanggamus Regency. A total of 50 coffee pickers were selected using purposive sampling. Physical workload was assessed using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while nutritional status was evaluated using Body Mass Index (BMI). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis with Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests. Results: The majority of respondents had high physical workload (40 respondents; 80%) and normal nutritional status (35 respondents; 70%). Bivariate analysis showed no statistically significant association between physical workload and nutritional status among coffee pickers (p>0.05). Discussion: The absence of a significant association may be influenced by several factors such as dietary patterns, energy balance, and lifestyle factors. Furthermore, the phenomenon of the occupational physical activity paradox suggests that physical activity performed in occupational settings does not always correlate directly with lower body mass index.
Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between physical workload and nutritional status among coffee pickers in Tanggamus Regency.
