Introduction: Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that requires long-term renal replacement therapy, particularly hemodialysis. This treatment often negatively affects patients’ sleep quality and psychological conditions, such as anxiety and depression. Conventional medical approaches primarily focus on physical management and may not adequately address patients’ holistic needs. Therefore, spiritual counseling has emerged as a complementary intervention to improve psychological well-being. This literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of spiritual counseling on sleep quality, anxiety, and depression among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis.
Method: This study was conducted as a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches were performed using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Europe PMC with relevant keywords. Inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials published within the last ten years, involving adult patients undergoing hemodialysis, and assessing outcomes related to sleep quality and psychological conditions.
Discussion: A total of six studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed descriptively. All reviewed studies reported significant improvements in sleep quality and significant reductions in anxiety and depression levels in groups receiving spiritual counseling compared to control groups. Spiritual interventions were shown to help patients manage stress, enhance inner peace, and improve psychological responses to chronic illness.
Conclusion: Spiritual counseling is effective as a complementary therapy in improving sleep quality and psychological well-being among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. This holistic approach should be considered in clinical healthcare practice.
