Background: The use of social media has become a prevalent tool for socializing, especially for teenagers and young adults. In 2022, 68.9% of the total population of Indonesia were social media users. Anxiety is the most common phenomenon among all mental health disorders. This study aims to establish the relationship between the intensity of social media use and anxiety levels in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra in 2022. Method: This is analytical research with a cross-sectional study with 258 samples (margin of error 5%). Results The spearman rho rank correlation test showed a positive and insignificant correlation between the intensity of social media usage and anxiety in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, in 2022 (r = 0.056, p = 0.374). Discussion: This study found no significant relationship between social media usage intensity and anxiety levels among medical students. These results contrast with previous studies that reported a positive correlation. It is suspected that students’ post-pandemic adaptation and the use of online questionnaires may have influenced the outcome. These findings highlight the importance of considering the quality of social media use rather than merely its intensity.
Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between the intensity of social media usage and anxiety in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, in 2022
