The Potential of Mangrove Leaf Extract (Rhizophora mucronata) against Staphylococcus aureus in the Healing of Infectious Wounds

Introduction: The medical field is currently facing significant challenges in managing infected wounds, especially those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant strains such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In response, interest in natural-based treatments has grown, particularly in mangrove plants like Rhizophora mucronata, known for their bioactive compound content. This literature review aims to assess the potential of R. mucronata leaf extract in suppressing the growth of S. aureus and enhancing wound healing processes.
Method: The analysis was conducted by systematically examining secondary data from peer reviewed scientific articles from databases including PubMed and Google Scholar. The literature was reviewed based on the presence of active compounds in R. mucronata, such as tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, phenols, steroids, and their antibacterial activity was tested through in vitro and in vivo studies.
Discussion: Findings from multiple experimental studies indicate that R. mucronata extract possesses strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties and accelerates tissue regeneration. Furthermore, topical formulations like ointments and gels derived from this extract show comparable healing efficacy to conventional treatments.
Conclusion: These results suggest that R. mucronata extract could serve as a promising natural alternative for managing skin infections caused by S. aureus, particularly in the context of rising antibiotic resistance.
