Abstract

Introduction: Global tourism increased to 1.3 billion in 2023, driving the growth of wellness tourism. Travelers are prone to stress and hypertension due to complex travel activities. This condition requires complementary therapy in addition to primary treatment, opening opportunities for the use of non-pharmacological therapies. One of these is classical music therapy, which is considered simple. This study aims to review the potential of classical music as a complementary therapy for hypertension and its application in wellness tourism.

Method: This study used a narrative literature review method with a systematic approach to the literature collected through systematic searches in several online databases such as PubMed, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar using the keywords: “complementary therapy”, “wellness tourism”, “classical music therapy”, “stress reduction”, and “hypertension”.

Discussion: Slow-tempo classical music stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby reducing stress and blood pressure. Several studies support its use as a complementary therapy for tourists and the public. Integrating classical music into wellness tourism can be a simple and effective strategy for reducing stress and hypertension.

Conclusion: The integration of classical music as a complementary therapy for stress and hypertension has the potential to improve the holistic health of tourists. Collaboration between health workers and tourism providers is essential to support this implementation, particularly in the development of health tourism based on local wisdom.
