Abstract

Introduction: Needle stick injury (NSI) is a work accident due to a needle puncture that can cause injury to the skin and potentially contaminated by blood or other people's body fluids. The prevalence of NSI is mostly found in medical students. Many risk factors have been reported related to NSI in medical students. Therefore, this study aims to determine the description of risk factors that influence the occurrence of needle stick injury in medical students in Indonesia and globally so that it can be information to improve the quality of health services and the performance of medical students in conducting educational practices in hospitals.

Method: This research is a literature review through the collection of literature from google scholar in 2018-2023 which finally obtained 8 literatures including Indonesian and global, in accordance with inclusion criteria.

Result: Based on 3 literature in Indonesia, significant NSI risk factors were found to be lack of knowledge and training on NSI prevention, the incidence of recapping needles, and the use of unsafe gloves. Based on 5 global literature, significant NSI risk factors were found to be lack of experience and training in health practices against NSI, lower knowledge level of first-year health students, and unsafe recapping needles and PPE.

Conclusion: Lack of knowledge and training in needle stick injury prevention is a risk factor that is closely related to the occurrence of needle stick injury in medical students both in Indonesia and globally.
