Abstract

Background: Glaucoma affects visual field function and a person's quality of life. Decreased visual field function results in reduced quality of life. The main goals of glaucoma therapy and surgery are to maintain the visual field and visual acuity and maintain the patient's quality of life and independence. So it is necessary to assess the quality of life of glaucoma patients who have not had trabeculectomy. Objective: To describe the quality of life of glaucoma patients who have or have not had trabeculectomy based on the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI-VFQ-25). Method: Followed by 54 patients with primary closed or open glaucoma in one eye or both who had or had not had trabeculectomy and taken from medical record data using cross-sectional analytical design with purposive sampling technique. The patient had a standard perimetry result of 24-2; an interview was conducted using the Indonesian version of the NEI VFQ-25. Results: Quality of life scores for trabeculectomy were slightly higher in several subscales. The mean score of patients who had trabeculectomy had a lower score. A moderate correlation was found between poor eye VFI for patients not yet trabeculectomy on the subscales: general health, general vision, distance vision, social function, mental health, peripheral vision, and mean patient score (p<0.05). Discussion: Patients undergoing therapy received higher scores, while patients undergoing both therapies received lower scores.

Conclusion: : There are differences in scoring and correlation of quality of life of glaucoma patients who have or have not had trabeculectomy with poor eye VFI.
