Abstract

Background: Incision wound healing is a complex biological process involving hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling phases. Fusidic acid is widely used as a topical therapy due to its antibacterial activity; however, prolonged use may lead to bacterial resistance. Anredera cordifolia (binahong) contains flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which have been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and collagen-stimulating effects, making it a potential alternative therapy.

Method: This study employed a true experimental design with a post-test only control group involving 25 male Rattus norvegicus of the Sprague-Dawley strain, divided into four groups: P0 (fusidic acid), and P1, P2, P3 treated with topical ethanol extract of binahong leaves at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. Wound healing was evaluated on days 3, 7, and 14 by measuring wound contraction. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by LSD post hoc test.

Results: No significant difference (p > 0.05) was found between P1, P2, and P3 compared to the positive control (P0).

Discussion: The highest effectiveness observed at 40% concentration is presumed to be associated with the anti-inflammatory activity and fibroblast proliferation stimulation from its secondary metabolites, which accelerate granulation tissue formation. These findings indicate that binahong extract has comparable wound healing potential to fusidic acid as a topical agent.

Conclusion: The ethanol extract of Anredera cordifolia leaves shows wound healing effectiveness comparable to fusidic acid and, at higher concentrations, may even surpass it in promoting skin incision healing in white rats. Binahong can be considered a promising herbal-based alternative for topical wound management.
