Health Profile of Elderly Individuals Based on Degenerative Disease Screening at Sekolah Lansia Gowa: A Descriptive Observational Study

Abstract

Introduction: Degenerative diseases in the elderly, including hypertension, hyperuricemia, and other metabolic disorders, remain common public health problems. These conditions may reduce the quality of life of older adults if early detection is not performed through regular health screening. This study aimed to determine the health profile of elderly individuals based on the results of degenerative disease screening conducted at Sekolah Lansia Gowa in 2026. Methods: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted at Sekolah Lansia Gowa on May 1, 2026, involving 37 respondents selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through interviews using an anamnesis form and health examinations, including blood pressure, blood glucose, and serum uric acid measurements. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis in SPSS and presented as frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, minimum values, and maximum values. Results: Most respondents were female (36 participants; 97.3%). The most frequently reported complaint was muscle cramps and generalized body aches, affecting 14 respondents (37.8%). Based on the American Heart Association (AHA) classification, most respondents were categorized as having Stage 2 hypertension (13 respondents; 35.1%). Blood glucose assessment showed that the majority of respondents had normal glucose levels (33 respondents; 89.2%), whereas elevated serum uric acid levels were identified in 22 respondents (59.5%). The mean systolic blood pressure was 132.24 ± 17.56 mmHg, while the mean serum uric acid level was 6.43 ± 1.41 mg/dL. Discussion: The high prevalence of hypertension and hyperuricemia among the elderly indicates that degenerative diseases and metabolic disorders remain major health concerns in this population. In addition, musculoskeletal complaints, such as muscle cramps, generalized body aches, and joint pain, were likely associated with age-related degenerative changes and elevated serum uric acid levels in several respondents. Conclusion: Elderly individuals at Sekolah Lansia Gowa were predominantly affected by musculoskeletal complaints. Furthermore, the screening results showed that most respondents had Stage 2 hypertension and elevated serum uric acid levels. Regular health screening is essential for the early detection of degenerative diseases and the prevention of related complications among older adults.
