Overview of Knowledge and Attitudes of Public Junior High School Students in Jambi City toward Scoliosis

Abstract

Background: Scoliosis is a spinal deformity marked by a lateral curvature forming an S or C shape and is common during adolescence, yet data on the knowledge and attitudes of junior high school students toward scoliosis in Jambi City remain limited. This study aimed to describe the knowledge and attitudes of public junior high school students in Jambi City toward scoliosis. Method: This descriptive quantitative study involved 463 eighth-grade students from eight public junior high schools in Jambi City, selected through cluster and simple random sampling. Data were collected using validated knowledge and attitude questionnaires and analyzed univariately using SPSS. Results: Nineteen percent of students reported a history of spinal disorders, and only 26.1% had previously received scoliosis-related learning. Knowledge levels were high in 66.7% of students, moderate in 32.8%, and low in 0.4%; attitudes were good in 57.9%, moderate in 39.7%, and poor in 2.4%. Discussion: Most students showed high knowledge and good attitudes, suggesting that health information accessed outside school also contributed despite limited formal education exposure. Gaps in understanding remained regarding sex-based risk differences and therapeutic exercise types.

Conclusion: Most students showed high knowledge and good attitudes toward scoliosis, indicating a need to strengthen school-based education and posture-screening programs.
