Distribution of Rectal Cancer Stages at Raden Mattaher Regional Hospital, Jambi, 2023–2025

Abstract

Background: Rectal cancer is a major subtype of colorectal cancer with a global incidence that keeps increasing. Disease stage at diagnosis plays an important role in determining treatment strategies, prognosis, and patient outcomes. This study aimed to characterize the stage distribution of rectal cancer patients at Raden Mattaher General Hospital, Jambi within the period of 2023– 2025. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study used secondary data obtained from the medical records of rectal cancer patients at Raden Mattaher General Hospital, Jambi, between 2023 and 2025. Total sampling was employed. Of 252 medical records reviewed, 147 patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Univariate analysis was performed to describe the distribution of rectal cancer stages. Results: A total of 147 patients were included in the analysis. Stage II was the most common stage, accounting for 48 patients (32.7%), followed by stage IV with 46 patients (31.3%), stage I with 24 patients (16.3%), stage III with 19 patients (12.9%), and stage 0 with 10 patients (6.8%). Discussion: The predominance of stage II indicates that most patients were diagnosed at an intermediate stage, while the substantial proportion of stage IV cases suggests delayed diagnosis in a considerable number of patients. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening early detection, public awareness, and colorectal cancer screening programs. Conclusion: Stage II was the most frequently identified stage of rectal cancer among patients at Raden Mattaher General Hospital, Jambi, during 2023–2025, followed by stage IV. Most patients were diagnosed at intermediate to advanced stages, which indicates the need for improved early detection and screening strategies to achieve better clinical outcomes.
