Abstract

Background: Believing in something continuously without controlling emotions will form an irrational mindset that can lead to irrational beliefs. Irrational beliefs are important in mental health because they are known to cause conditions such as depression and suicidal thoughts. Cognitive therapy is known to help a person in changing attitudes, ways of thinking, and unrealistic beliefs to become rational and more realistic. One important component of cognitive therapy is self-talk that can influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-talk and the incidence of irrational beliefs in college students. Method: This study is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design with a population of all students of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University who live in the Unires student dormitory. The sample was taken with purposive sampling technique and obtained 166 respondents who participated in this study. The research instrument is a questionnaire which contains Authomatic Thoughts Questionnaire and Self-Talk Scale. Data analysis was carried out with normality test, homogenity test, and mann-whitney test as hypothesis test. Results: The result of this study showed a significant difference between the mean score of irrational beliefs in respondents with positive self-talk when compared to the mean score of irrational beliefs in respondents with negative self-talk with Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value <0.001. Discussion: Positive self-talk and negative self-talk can modulate brain states related to cognitive function. This modulating effect is associated with modifications in brain network connectivity that may affect cognitive performance. Conclusion: Based on the research, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the level of irrational beliefs in respondents with positive self-talk when compared to the level of irrational beliefs in respondents with negative self-talk.
